A few words with John Gabrielson
Interview by: Nick Gibson

-When did you first get into the car scene, and did it start with imports?
Well, I would say it really started about 5 years ago...a few months after I got my IS300

-Was that your first car?
No...I actually started off at 16 with a '95 Dodge Neon that had a good 120,000 miles on it. Then went to an '01 Jetta that I totaled, transitioned with a '95 Jeep Wrangler with more problems than I can list, and then finally settled with the IS

-And what made you pick the IS?
actually...I'll get flamed for this but it was a surprise Graduation present type of thing. Since I was going over 4 hours away from home my mom and grandparents didn't want me driving that troublesome Jeep. Definitely glad they chose it though.

-Wow that's awesome
yea I am definitely lucky

-How long after you got it did you decide to start modding?
well I probably had it a good 3-4 months before I did the usual intake and exhaust. Almost 2 years before I really got into modding her seriously

-What caused the shift from minor mods, to building it up like you have
boredom I guess. haha Just wanted to try and make her as unique as I could since a lot of the modded IS's looked similar

-makes sense,

-What work did you do yourself, or did shops take care of everything?
for the most part shops did a lot of it. I do most of the upkeep myself. Slowly but surely I'm learning more and more about the motor so I can do all that myself.

-That's cool, I wish I knew enough to do all the work on my car as well lol

-Do you have any horror stories from shops, or have you been lucky and have everything go as planned
for the most part everything has gone as planned Just little things that could/should have been taken care of by the shop
-So your one of those guys I heard about that have all the luck. Thought it was just legend.

-How did you go about choosing the shops?
more so word of mouth, but I definitely researched as well. I have to know I can trust someone with my car before I let them take it apart and what not. I'll admit I'm usually not the first person with my car to have gone to a shop...I try to make sure they've had some experience with my car.

-Yeah def the way to do it, I'm always surprised how some people just drop their car off and hope for the best
for real..like giving an import to an American muscle guy, not the best idea
-haha yup

-So when did you decide you wanted to get into the show scene
I really didn't show much until the Middle of 2005. My first show was HIN Orlando and I was introduced to it mainly by fellow teammate and good friend Adrian Mayor. Definitely his fault! he's gonna kill me for that! lol

lol why
He hates when I say he spends my money! lol But in all honesty, he doesn't he led me into something great that I love to be a part of. He is a big help in designing though. He's the man behind the ideas (for the most part) and I'm the man behind the wallet!

-haha wanted to make sure he wasn't going to get ya huh?
Yea better on my side than against me!

-So getting back to shows, what's the main reason you do it? We all know it can be a pain at times.
I do it for the experience! I could care less about a trophy or the girls! Hanging with the guys is number 1. Being able to get together and do something you love with "family" that enjoys it too is the best feeling. Besides...trophies collect dust and get in the way!! haha

-haha so true

-Do you ever track your car, or plan to?
I took it to the 1/4 mile once and was scared shitless! haha A buddy of mine had just wrecked his turbo IS at the track up north, and I really didn't want to be the second one. So I was a little hesitant. But it was cool and down the road I'm sure I'll go again...

-So with no track outlet what do you do with that supercharger? any street stories?
haha...street stories, let's see....I have my fun here and there. I try to be a good boy but sometimes the sound of the supercharger takes over me. Kinda like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. But yes I have been known to push the limits sometimes

-Good to hear, Gotta wake up that beast every now and then.

-K let get off cars for a bit, what do you do for a living?
well for right now...I work at Florida Atlantic University in the Biomedical Science department as their receiving clerk....the short version of that is I sit at a desk on the computer and wait for packages to be delivered! (Oh yea and do featured car interviews..haha)

-Bahh I wanted to say the feature part haha
haha sorry to disappoint

-So between work and cars do you have time for any other hobbies?
not really. I love to relax! whenever that is possible I try to do so. Other than that I spend a lot of time with my girlfriend. She keeps me down to earth a lot.

-That's cool always good to have a girl to keep you level

-Do you drink beer when you relax cause as far as this interview is concerned that could be a hobby
hahaha I love a nice cold beer! If I can hold 2 that's even better!

-Oh can't forget this one...of all the car clubs out there nowadays, what made you zero in on Solo?
well I was lured here by a bunch of good friends....Mario and Randy were already members at the time and I got hosed by a buddy at Hot Import Nights Miami in '05, so I was left with no one to park with until Randy came to my aid and told me to park with the Solo crew...ever since then I've been hooked! Best thing to happen to me yet!

-Really? didn't know that. Guess we can blame randy then
yea Randy started the whole thing, but what else is new right? lol

-Any shoutouts, thanks, sponsors stuff like that
of course....

To my family for the most part and my girlfriend for putting up with my addiction! Also to Team Solo all my brothers from other mothers haha you guys keep me motivated. And anyone else that has inspired me to pursue this little hobby..

Sponsors! I would have to thank Rotora, Iforged, Meguiars, Advanced Automotive Concepts, FIGS Engineering, RabanMediaX.net, and 561audio.com
